UPDATE: Three people shot including 2 police officers in Falmouth, Police Chief issues statement
According to Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts State Police patrol, tactical, investigative and forensic units responded to Falmouth to assist local police in the response to the shooting of two Falmouth police officers.
According to Falmouth Police Chief Edward A. Dunne, one officer was struck in the head area and another in the chest. One officer has been released from the hospital. The suspect was shot and is currently at Boston Hospital.
The initial call came in for a disturbance of breaking glass bottles in the roadway in East Falmouth on Ashley Drive. The suspect retrieved a gun at his home and began firing.
The suspect Malik Koval, 21, was shot several times and is known to police. In June 2016, Mashpee Police cited Koval for failure to stop for police and several vehicle violations. Koval is expected to survive.
Chief Dunne issued the following statement: “This is happening way too much. We have to return back to a time when officers are respected and it is not ok to shoot a police officer. I am thankful tonight someone was looking after my officers and it didn’t end up like Yarmouth and Weymouth. I believe the officers will recover physically, but psychologically I am concerned for them and every other officer in my department and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
