A 14-year-old girl was fatally struck by a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority train in Worcester near the 100 block of Atlas Street on the Framingham/Worcester Line on Thursday.

According to multiple reports, MBTA Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan stated the preliminary investigation suggests the girl was positioned within the tracks’ gauge and was hit by the train, resulting in her death at the scene.

No foul play is suspected, and her identity has not been released.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. when the girl, who was part of a group of teens, trespassed on the railway right-of-way.

Following the crash, train service was halted at Grafton, and passengers were shuttled by bus until the line reopened Friday morning.

Sullivan stated “on behalf of the Transit Police and the entire MBTA organization we offer our most heartfelt condolences to the decedent’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this most unimaginable difficult and profound tragedy.”

Transit Police, along with the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the incident.

The death is one of several recently involving collisions with trains in Massachusetts.
