Teen indicted in fatal Cape Cod crash that killed 17-year-old, seriously injured another
A Massachusetts teen is facing charges in a fatal crash.
According to Danielle Whitney, Director of Community Programs & Public Relation at the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, her office presented an investigation conducted by the Mashpee Police Department to the Barnstable County Grand Jury regarding the circumstances involving a car crash on June 25th, that claimed the life of a 17-year-old and seriously hurt another occupant. At the conclusion of the presentation, the Grand Jury handed up two indictments against 17-year-old Jack Burns charging him with operating a motor vehicle recklessly resulting in a death and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury.
According to police, at just after 2:00 a.m., Mashpee Police and Fire responded to a single vehicle crash on Carlton Drive near Swain Circle.
Upon arrival, officers found a heavily damaged Toyota Rav4.
It appears the vehicle was traveling north on Carlton Drive when the driver lost control and struck a tree.
Police and Fire personnel discovered that there were 7 people in the vehicle between the ages of 15-17 residing in Mashpee and Falmouth.
6 of the 7 were transported from the scene to area hospitals two with life threatening injuries. Nolan Barr, later died from those injuries.
Barr played on both the football and basketball teams for Mashpee High School and was set to graduated next year. He was described as one of the nicest kids you would want to meet with a good sense of humor and often had a smile on his face.
A GoFundMe fundraiser was been created for the family.
An arraignment date will be set in the Falmouth Juvenile Court.
The crash is under investigation.
