Taunton man killed in crash Friday after being Good Samaritan
Massachusetts State Troopers from State Police-Middleborough continue to investigate this morning’s crash that resulted in the fatality of a Good Samaritan on Route 495 in Raynham.
Shortly before 1 a.m. a 2019 Audi Q7 SUV that was travelling on Route 495 southbound in Raynhan struck a deer in the area of the Route 104 underpass and became disabled in the middle travel lane. The Audi was driven by 44-year-old male from Chesapeake, Va., and was also occupied by three passengers, two adults and a 7-year-old child.
At approximately 12:58 a.m., the operator of a 2018 Toyota Tacoma pickup observed the disabled vehicle and pulled into the breakdown lane to assist the occupants of the Audi. The Tacoma’s driver, Luis Contreras, 37, of Taunton, exited the truck and walked onto the roadway to offer assistance. Preliminary crash reconstruction indicates that while Contreras was walking in the travel lanes he was struck by a 2006 Infiniti G35 coupe driven by a 21-year-old Rockland man. Contreras was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Infiniti remained on scene.
Neither the driver of the Infiniti nor the occupants of the Audi had any apparent injuries. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing and being conducted by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County. Troopers were also assisted on scene by Raynham firefighters and Massachusetts Department of Transportation workers. The middle and right travel lanes were closed in the area of the crash to facilitate the rescue response and subsequent investigation. The lanes were reopened just before 4 a.m.
