Swansea Police arrest Brockton, Taunton men on gun, stolen vehicle charges after observing suspicious activity
SWANSEA — Chief Marc Haslam reports that the Swansea Police Department arrested three men on multiple firearms and stolen vehicle charges early this morning.
At approximately 4:45 a.m. Monday, a Swansea Police officer on routine patrol observed two suspicious vehicles in the parking lot of the Swansea YMCA on Sharps Lot Road, when the facility was not open.
The officer observed a dark-colored Nissan SUV next to a dark-colored Dodge SUV. As the officer pulled into the parking lot, he observed the Nissan quickly exit the parking lot with the headlights turned off. The Nissan’s headlights were turned on as the vehicle was seen accelerating out of the lot.
The officer then initiated a traffic stop of the Nissan. While speaking with the three individuals in the Nissan, the officer observed a Halloween mask in the rear driver’s side seat fitting the description of a ski mask that was allegedly used in an armed car jacking reported in Brockton earlier in the morning.
The officer called for backup and additional officers responded to the scene. The three occupants of the vehicle were detained and the vehicle was searched. Inside of the vehicle officers allegedly found a Dodge car key. Police determined that the key belonged to the Dodge SUV that was in the YMCA parking lot. The Dodge SUV had been reported stolen out of Brockton.
Also inside the vehicle officers allegedly found and seized were a Polymer 80 handgun with a red laser sight mounted on the front rail, a high capacity “drum type” magazine loaded with ammunition, a bag of marijuana, and a digital scale
The three men were subsequently placed under arrest.
