Suspicious explosive device detonated in Tiverton authorities say

TIVERTON, RI – Police have issued an update after residents were evacuated in Tiverton on Tuesday.

According to a Tiverton Police release, at just after 10:00 a.m., members of the Tiverton Police Department and Tiverton Fire Department responded to a residence on Riverside Drive for the report of a found explosive device inside a garage. 

“Upon arrival, personnel observed the suspected device, later identified as a 3 4-inch solid projectile. As a precaution, residents in close proximity to the residence were safely evacuated. The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Explosives Operations Division was requested to the scene, along with the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Newport. 

“Specialists from the EOD units conducted an x-ray of the device and determined it to be an armor-piercing shell. The item was safely removed from the residence and transported to an off-site location, where it was detonated without further incident. 

“The Tiverton Police Department thanks the residents for their cooperation during the evacuation and acknowledges the assistance of the Tiverton Fire Department, Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the U.S. Navy EOD Unit for ensuring the safety of the community. 

“No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.”
