Standoff with endangered armed man at Bristol County hotel ends peacefully

A scary situation for a local parent had a positive outcome on Tuesday.

According to Police Chief Ronald Sellon, at approximately 3:50 p.m., the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from a distraught parent reporting that she had just heard from her son who was under the influence and armed at a local hotel.

The caller’s son was threatening to harm himself or law enforcement if anyone tried to intervene.

Mansfield Officers were dispatched to the Fairfield Inn at 50 Reservoir Street and began the process of evacuating the hotel and containing the area while maintaining contact with the reporting party.

Mutual aid was also requested from the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council including the Crisis Negotiators Team and a mental health clinician.

With the scene secure, negotiators spent the next four hours establishing contact and engaging in meaningful dialogue with the subject. Just after 8:30 p.m., he agreed to accept help and was peacefully transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Sellon thanked the partner agencies for helping to bring about a safe conclusion to the situation.
