Multiple local crews responded to a major fire Friday morning that destroyed a residence.

According to a statement from Somerset Fire Chief Jamison Barros, at approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning, the Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 40 Queen Street. Engine 6 arrived on scene within minutes to find heavy smoke showing, which was believed to be coming from the basement. Engine 5, which was clearing from a medical call in the north end of town, responded shortly thereafter.

First-arriving crews, having confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the home, quickly established a water supply and deployed a handline to the basement to begin fire suppression efforts. A short time later, the fire extended from the basement to the first floor.

With the assistance of the Swansea Fire Department, crews conducted a coordinated interior attack on both levels of the structure and were able to bring the fire under control.

Due to significant damage, the residents have been temporarily displaced. The American Red Cross has been contacted and is providing support.

Barros commended “firefighters for their quick response, professionalism, and strong teamwork throughout this incident. We also extend our sincere thanks to the Swansea Fire Department for their assistance at the scene, the Fall River Fire Department for providing station coverage, and both Fall River Special Services and the Providence Canteen for delivering rehab services to our personnel. I’m sharing this information to keep our community aware of major incidents that occur in town, and the services your firefighters provide our residents. Our thoughts are with the family as they begin to move forward from this incident.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
