An operation by a local police department to help increase pedestrian safety resulted in over two dozen citations.

According to police, on Tuesday, utilizing grant funds awarded through the Municipal Road Safety Grant Program, three Somerset Police Officers conducted pedestrian safety operations at locations along MA Route 138 from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

During the time frame, approximately 30 traffic stops were conducted for crosswalk violations. These stops resulted in the issuance of twenty-five citations and the arrest of an operator on an outstanding warrant.

SPD asks the public to be on-alert for pedestrians entering into and walking within a crosswalk. An observed violation for not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk may result in a $205 citation. More importantly, such inattention could cause serious bodily injury or death to a pedestrian.
