Several events taking place in Fall River in honor of Memorial Day
Several events, including some new ones, are taking place in Fall River in honor of Memorial Day.
SATURDAY, MAY 28TH “CANDLELIGHT VIGIL”
Taking place at the Vietnam Memorial Wall located in Veterans’ Memorial Bicentennial Park.
The event is being sponsored by the Fall River War Veterans’ Council and Rolling Thunder, Inc. in partnership with the City of Fall River & Veterans’ Services.
Rolling Thunder, Inc. chapters from six New England states will be riding & roaring into Veterans’ Memorial Park to join Fall River War Veterans’ Council & Veterans’ organizations to keep the memory of the men and women named upon the wall who were killed in action and are prisoners of war who never returned home.
Those present will be lighting up the night with their cell phones, flashlights, and other electronic devices, to light up the night at the Wall which is a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
Veterans, their families and friends and citizens are invited to join the War Veterans Council and Rolling Thunder at the event which will take place at dusk (about 8:00-8:30 p.m.). Multiple vendors of products and services will be in attendance in the hours leading up to the event. Children will be given free M&Ms that were a staple for WW II Veterans and Tootsie Rolls that were a staple for Korean War Veterans, in addition to other activities.
SUNDAY, MAY 29TH “HONOR WREATH CEREMONY”
Taking place at the Vietnam Memorial Wall located in Veterans’ Memorial Bicentennial Park.
The event is being sponsored by the Fall River War Veterans’ Council and Rolling Thunder, Inc. in partnership with the City of Fall River & Veterans’ Services.
Rolling Thunder, Inc., Fall River War Veterans’ Council & Veterans’ organizations will be laying a special wreath at the Vietnam Memorial Wall and at all of the Veterans’ war monuments in the Veterans’ Memorial Bicentennial Park, such as the War on Terrorism Monument, the Korean War Monument, the State of Massachusetts Official Gold Star Families Memorial, the Italian American Veterans War Monument and the WW II, Iwo Jima Memorial, which is cast from the original mold used to make the first Iwo Jima WW II Monument. The ceremony begins at 2:00 p.m., at the Vietnam Memorial Wall and then will proceed to all of the other monuments in the park. Wreaths will be placed by a family member of someone who was killed in action. People will begin to arrive at approximately noon.
SUNDAY, MAY 29TH VETERANS MEMORIAL GET TOGETHER
Will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Liberal Club on Star Street. Free food & entertainment will be taking place for all Honor Wreath attendees, Rolling Thunder, Veterans, and Families/Friends of Veterans.
MONDAY, MAY 30TH MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
The City of Fall River and the Fall River Veterans’ Council will be conducting the annual Memorial Day Parade that will travel from Kennedy Park, So. Main St., to North Main Street and will conclude at the Fall River Government Center Atrium, One Government Center, where closing ceremonies will be held. Assembly of parade is at Kennedy Park, corner of So. Main St. and Bradford Ave. at 1:00 p.m. and step off is at 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. Public is invited.
