Several arrests made after Newport officers injured after reportedly being kicked and punched by group

Multiple arrests have been made after police in Rhode Island say that officers were assaulted.
According to police, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the Festival Field Housing Development, 90 Girard Avenue, for a report of domestic violence crimes that had occurred.
Through the police investigation, 28-year-old Angel Cruz Martinez of Newport, was identified as the suspect and was wanted on Domestic Simple Assault, Domestic Disorderly Conduct, Vandalism and Larceny charges.
A short time later, Martinez was observed in the area. Officers approached him and when they attempted to take him into custody, he resisted their efforts by punching them and pushing away from them. While officers were struggling with Martinez, several by-standers began assaulting the officers by kicking and punching them. Shortly thereafter, multiple officers arrived on scene and immediately thwarted the attack on the two officers.
The two Newport Officers who were assaulted were taken to the Newport Hospital where they were treated and released with minor injuries.
In addition to the Domestic Violence charges, Martinez was also charged with Simple Assault and Resisting Arrest.
Three other parties were taken into custody related to this incident: 39-year-old Jose Carreras of Newport, (charged with Assault of a Police Officer, Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct); 28-year-old Calvin Febles of Middletown, (charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstructing an Officer in the Execution of their Duty) and 37-year-old Jetsenia Luna Schmidt of Newport, (charged with Disorderly Conduct).
Newport Police Detectives are investigating this incident and more arrests are expected.
All four parties will be arraigned in Newport District Court today.
