Services announced as military/police veteran Brian Cordeiro of Fall River remembered by those who knew him; fundraiser also created

The Fall River Police Department is mourning the loss of a member of their family. The local community is mourning the loss of a friend who gave of himself.

On Friday, 54-year-old retired Detective Brian Cordeiro, passed away unexpectedly at Rhode Island Hospital due to a tragic accident.

Det. Cordeiro retired on April 30, 2023, after serving the Fall River Police Department for 25 years. Since that time, he had served as a Special Police Officer.

According to an obituary, Cordeiro was a Sergeant in the RI National Guard over 20 years. He was a Military Police Officer, bravely serving in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Operation Iraqi Freedom & Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003-2004 and served a tour of duty at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in 2009-2010.

Cordeiro was recognized with several citations and commendations, culminating in being named the Office of the Year in 2014 and in 2009. He was awarded the” Above and Beyond for Children Award” from the Children Advocacy Center for his dedication and support.

Brian was a member of the Fall River Police Relief Association, Massachusetts Police Association, Quartermaster at the VFW in Tiverton, member of the Elks in Fall River, a Mason and a proud Patriots Season Ticket holder.

Social media was flooded Friday once word spread of Cordeiro’s passing remembering his infectious personality, enthusiasm, selflessness, sense of humor, caring nature, and giving spirit. Those who were mentored by him and the lives that he changed expressed their shock and sadness over the loss.

According to a social media post, Cordeiro was even a giver in death as his organs were donated to save lives.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created for burial costs, uninsured medical expenses, and a social gathering event which will follow the funeral service..

Cordeiro’s Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 3 to 7:00 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County St., Somerset. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Louis de France Church, 56 Buffinton St., Swansea. Burial with Military Honors will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Somerset.
