School custodian recognized as hero after climbing tree, to rescue driver in fiery Wareham crash

A southeastern Massachusetts man is being recognized as a hero and for good reason.

According to the Wareham Fire Department, at just before 6:30 p.m. on September 8th, Wareham Fire Engine 1, Rescue 1, Squad 2, C-1 (Chief Kelley) and C-2 (Assistant Chief Haskell) along with Onset Ladder 1 and Onset C-2 (Assistant Chief Andersen), responded to 164 Marion Road for a report of a vehicle that struck a home and was on fire.

At the scene, firefighters found a van that had struck the residence, causing significant damage. Visible fire was quickly knocked down and the driver of the van was transported to an area hospital by Wareham EMS.

The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team was summoned to assist with the removal of the vehicle from the home and assist in stabilizing the structure. The house was vacant and undergoing renovations at the time of the incident.

John Kelsch was recognized at a Bourne School Committee meeting for his heroic act after the crash.

Kelsch, a custodian at Bourne Middle School, was doing yard work at home when he witnessed the van crash into the side of a home and catch fire.

The van hit the roof of the home, and the driver was stuck in the burning vehicle several feet above ground.

Kelsch ran to the car, climbed up a tree, opened the door to the van and attempted to get the driver out before falling out of the tree. Firefighters later transported the driver to a nearby hospital.

“In a moment of crisis, Mr. Kelsch reacted immediately to help free this driver from his burning vehicle, risking his safety to save another,” Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou said. “We are incredibly proud and grateful to have Mr. Kelsch in our BPS community. Mr. Kelsch, thank you for your bravery and for being a shining example of a true hero.”
