A Rhode Island woman is facing charges after a disturbing find by police officers.

According to police, on December 19th, Coventry Animal Control Officers responded to Circlewood Drive to conduct a wellbeing check of the animals on the property.

When Animal Control arrived at the residence, they located a male German Shepherd “Hanz” confined to a sunroom. The dog was clearly emaciated with his ribs, hips, and spine visible through the skin. There were no indications that the dog had access to any food or water.

Animal Control took custody of the dog, and it was immediately transported to an area Animal Hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of the dog’s condition, Animal Control was referred to an area Emergency Animal Hospital where the dog was admitted for the night.

On Wednesday, 25-year-old Caitlyn Pelton, of Coventry, was arraigned at Kent County District Court on charges of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animal; Care Of Dogs (failure to provide adequate food or water); and Rabies Vaccination Required.

Pelton was released on $1,000 Personal Recognizance and was ordered not to have
any animals. Her next court date is scheduled for February 4th in 3rd District Court.

Police say that “Hanz” has been in the care of their Animal Control Officers since December 19th. With the improvement of “Hanz’s” health, he is now available for adoption. Coventry Animal Control is taking donations for “Hanz’s” medical care. Any question please contact Coventry Animal Control at (401-822-9106).
