Rhode Island woman dies after getting hit by car while sitting at restaurant picnic table
What initially was a harmless relaxing moment sitting at a picnic table in the summer sun turned tragic on Friday.
According to Warwick Police and WJAR, a woman has died, and her husband seriously injured after a car crashed into picnic tables that were occupied outside of a clam shack.
The crash took place at Tommy’s Clam Shack on 2247 Warwick Avenue in Warwick just after 2:00 p.m.
66-year-old Susan Hjerpe died from her injuries at Rhode Island Hospital, and her husband, Carl, is in stable condition as of early Saturday afternoon.
The driver reportedly hit the gas pedal by accident while traveling through the eatery’s parking lot and struck the couple sitting at the picnic tables.
According to social media posts, the clam shack closed for the day on Friday and remained closed on Saturday.
