Rhode Island State Police release preliminary investigation into double fatal rollover highway crash

The Rhode Island State Police have released details about a motor vehicle crash that killed two people Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., State Police was notified of a motor vehicle crash on Route 295 north near Mendon Road in Cumberland. Troopers from the Scituate Barracks and Lincoln Barracks responded along with officers and fire/rescue personnel from Cumberland. 

Upon arrival, Troopers located a deceased victim and a second victim with serious injuries who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

A preliminary investigation found that a vehicle was traveling on Route 295 South near Mendon Road when it lost control, crossed the center median, entered the northbound lanes, and struck a pickup truck. The operator of the first vehicle was deceased on scene. The operator of the pickup truck was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
