Rhode Island State Police investigating fatal Friday afternoon crash
The Rhode Island State Police announces that a 47-year-old Rhode Island man died in a one car motor vehicle collision on Route 295 South in the Town of Smithfield.
The victim was identified as Jason Denton of Coventry, Rhode Island.
Today at approximately 2:20 p.m. Troopers received a report of a motor vehicle collision on Route 295 South, one mile north of Exit 12B, in the Town of Smithfield.
An investigation of the collision revealed that the motor vehicle was traveling south in the third lane of travel when it veered to the right, crossing over the three lanes of travel. The motor vehicle exited the roadway, traveled down the embankment, entered the wood line and struck several trees before coming to final rest.
As a result of the collision, the lone operator sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Smithfield Fire Department.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
