Rhode Island police officer dies after battle with mental illness, her department states
The North Kingstown Police Department has announced the loss of Officer Brittany Dougal, who tragically died by suicide this week after battling mental illness.
Officer Dougal graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, 145th Class (2025-II), on December 19, 2025. During her time at the academy, she earned the respect of the academy staff for her dedication and heart, graduating second academically in her class.
Following her graduation, Officer Dougal was sworn in as a North Kingstown Police Officer on December 22, 2025, and began the Field Training Evaluation Program. In the short time she served with our department, her field training officers recognized her commitment and the promise of a successful career.
The Department released the following:
