Rhode Island mother charged in domestic violence murder of 21-year-old severely autistic daughter

CRANSTON, RI – The Cranston Police Department has charged a woman with Domestic Violence – Murder – First Degree in connection with the death of her 21-year-old daughter, Alexandra Straccia.

According to police, on Sunday, July 27, 2026, at just after 8:30 a.m., Cranston Police officers responded to 50 Kingwood Avenue after the property’s landlord reported a water emergency at the residence.

Upon entering the first-floor apartment, officers located 62-year-old Anna Maria Angelosanto, of Cranston, suffering from apparent self-inflicted injuries. She was transported by Cranston Fire Department rescue personnel to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Officers also located Alexandra Straccia deceased inside the residence. The Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiner responded to the scene and assumed custody of the victim.

The Cranston Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation. Detectives obtained a court-authorized search warrant and conducted a methodical examination of the residence, recovering physical evidence, including a handwritten note and prescription and over-the-counter medications. Detectives also interviewed family members and Angelosanto during her hospitalization.

As the investigation progressed, detectives developed probable cause to believe that Angelosanto intentionally caused the death of her daughter before attempting to take her own life. Following consultation with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, detectives obtained a warrant charging Angelosanto with Domestic Violence – Murder – First Degree.

Alexandra Straccia was 21 years old and had severe autism. She was entirely dependent upon her mother for around-the-clock care.

“This is an extraordinarily tragic case that has deeply affected our community and everyone involved in the investigation,” said Colonel Michael J. Winquist, Chief of Police. “Our detectives conducted a thorough, professional, and compassionate investigation under extremely difficult circumstances. We extend our deepest condolences to Alexandra’s family and loved ones as they continue to cope with this devastating loss.”

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with Alexandra’s family, her loved ones, and all those affected by this loss,” said Mayor Kenneth J. Hopkins. “I commend the Cranston Police Department and all of the first responders and professionals who handled this difficult investigation with compassion, professionalism, and respect for everyone involved. This case is a painful reminder of the tremendous challenges families and caregivers can face, and the importance of reaching out for help when someone is struggling.”

Upon her release from Rhode Island Hospital this afternoon, Angelosanto was taken into custody by detectives from the Cranston Police Special Victims Unit. She was arraigned at Cranston Police Department Headquarters before a justice of the peace, ordered held without bail, and transported to the Adult Correctional Institution Women’s Intake Facility.

The investigation remains active. No additional information was released.
