Rhode Island man with prior charges sentenced to prison in Fall River Superior Court for Armed Robbery
A Rhode Island man was sentenced to prison in Fall River Superior Court Friday morning on multiple charges.
According to police, on January 14th, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Cumberland Police’s newly deployed Flock camera system alerted on two vehicles that had just entered the town in the area of Broad Street wanted for separate reasons by outside jurisdictions including an Attleboro armed robbery. Cumberland Police officers observed one of the vehicles travelling on Broad Street and, while attempting to conduct a motor vehicle stop, that vehicle quickly fled into Central Falls. For safety, the attempt to stop this vehicle was terminated at the border with Central Falls, but officers continued to look for the other vehicle in the same area. While looking for the second alerted vehicle, a motor vehicle crash was reported in the area of Lusitana Avenue, just in from Broad Street, with a subject fleeing from the disabled vehicle. Believing this may be the 2nd vehicle being sought, officers responded to the crash and discovered this was actually a different vehicle- a 3rd vehicle.
While officers were on scene, the Attleboro Police Department advised that they were looking for a vehicle just involved in an armed robbery in their city just over the border from Cumberland at N&R Wholesale on 30 Mann Street, and the wanted vehicle matched the description of the vehicle discovered in the Cumberland crash. The operator of this vehicle, 23-year-old Chance McKinney of Cranston, was located in the adjacent neighborhood to the crash by Cumberland PD officers and apprehended without further incident.
McKinney was charged in Rhode Island with Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, 1st Offense, Receiving Stolen Goods- Misdemeanor, Possession of Schedule I, II, III, IV, V Under 10 Grams- Crack Cocaine, Obstructing an Officer in the Execution of Duty, Fugitive From Justice, Driving with a Suspended/Revoked/Cancelled License, Duty to Stop in an Accident Resulting in Damage to an Attended Vehicle (2x counts), Duty to Stop in an Accident Resulting in Damage to a Highway Fixture, Laned Roadway Violations (Motor Vehicle Citation), and Failure to File an Accident Report (Motor Vehicle Citation).
According to court records, McKinney was indicted in Fall River Superior Court for the Attleboro Armed Robbery and pled guilty Friday morning to Armed/Masked Robbery (3 counts), Vandalizing Property (2 counts), Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.
He was sentenced to not less than 6 years to not more than 9 years with credit for 406 days already served.
At the time of this incident, McKinney was out on bail from a prior conspiracy charge out of Providence Police in September of 2024.
The case in Rhode Island is still pending.
