A Rhode Island man has been charged after allegedly driving the wrong way over the weekend.

According to State Police, on Saturday, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Troopers from Troop E were dispatched to I-395 south, prior to exit 11 in the Town of Norwich, Connecticut for the report of a wrong way driver. Troopers arrived quickly and observed a vehicle stopped in the left shoulder of I-395 south, facing north.

Troopers spoke to the operator and identified him as 22-year-old John Turo of Westerly, RI. Turo’s speech was very slow, his eyes were very watery, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his person. Based on Troopers belief that Turo was under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs, Turo was requested to submit to the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests which he complied. Turo did not perform the tests to standard and was subsequently placed under arrest.

Turo was taken into custody and transported to Troop E without incident. Turo was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol and Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway.

Turo was issued and released on a $5,000 bond awaiting a court date of 02/04/2025 at Norwich Superior Court.
