Rhode Island man released on $5,000 Personal Recognizance after 4 dogs found emaciated, 3 others found dead

A Rhode Island man is facing several charges after a disturbing discovery.

According to police, on Monday just after12:15 p.m., members of the Warwick Police Department responded to a home on Sand Pond Road, Warwick for the report of an emaciated dog with no food or water in the yard of the residence.

Warwick Animal Control Officers responded and located 1 severely emaciated dog with open sores in the back yard of the residence. Officers also observed and could hear additional dogs inside the residence and detected a strong odor of feces, urine and decay emanating from the inside. Based on the circumstance, Warwick Police Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property at Sand Pond Road. 

As a result of the investigation, 4 malnourished and emaciated dogs were seized from the residence and transported to the Warwick Animal Shelter for treatment. Additionally, 3 deceased dogs were located at the residence. 

At this time, based on the investigation, 1 resident was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple animal cruelty related offenses. 

22-year-old Michael J. Diaz of Sand Pond Road, Warwick, RI was arrested and charged with 3 Felony counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animals, Death Resulting and 4 Misdemeanor counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animals, Failing to Provide Adequate Living Conditions, Food and Water. 

According to court records, Diaz did not enter a plea and was released on $5,000 Personal Recognizance on conditions of Pretrial Services to Monitor for Mental Health.

A screening hearing is set for December.
