A Rhode Island man is facing several charges after an alleged incident that took place this month.

According to State Police, on Monday at just after 10:15 a.m., 28-year-old Ariel Dejesus Valdez of Providence, Rhode Island, was extradited from Rhode Island to Connecticut on the strength of an extraditable arrest warrant held by Connecticut State Police Troop G in Bridgeport.

The arrest warrant for Valdez’s arrest stemmed from an assault which occurred at the North Fairfield Service Plaza on December 7th. Following the assault, Valdez fled Connecticut and was later taken into custody by Rhode Island Law Enforcement Officials once an extraditable arrest warrant was approved.

Valdez was arrested without incident and processed at Troop G where he was charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 53-21 – Risk of Injury to a Child

C.G.S. 53a-64 – Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree (2 counts)

C.G.S. 53a-64bb – Strangulation or Suffocation in the 2nd Degree

C.G.S. 53a-116 – Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree

C.G.S. 53a-124 – Larceny 3rd Degree

C.G.S. 53a-181 – Breach of Peace 2nd Degree

In an arrest warrant, the victim stated that Valdez has an active warrant out of the Dominican Republic and was here on a temporary visitor visa out of Florida and never informed Homeland Security that he went elsewhere. She also mentioned that he did not board his scheduled departure flight back to the Dominican Republic in September.

The victim gave a statement saying that the incident involved a one-month-old baby.

An excerpt from the victim’s statement is as follows:

“I turned on the truck and tried to leave because I thought he had climbed out, but I looked behind me and he had opened the toolbox in the bed. I put the vehicle in park, and he climbed out, and then he broke the right back seat window, and the window shattered on my baby. I turned to look behind me and saw my babies face was full of blood, and he was crying. I screamed for help to call 911 and a truck driver parked by me walked over to me and told me to call 911 and go inside the rest area. After Ariel broke the window, he stood next to a tractor trailer and didn’t move, and I stayed in my truck. He then walked back over to me and opened the driver door and choked me with both of his hands around (my) neck. He threw me back with force after he choked me and then he walked away towards the rest area.

Valdez was unable to post his $100,000 court set bond and was held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center. Valdez was scheduled for arraignment at Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday.
