Some residents are expressing concerns after Swampscott Town officials say the recent restriping of two rainbow crosswalks was part of scheduled road work, not a change in the town’s support for LGBTQIA+ residents, as a fundraiser has started to bring the colors back.
According to a Friday statement, the Town said it completed regularly scheduled maintenance of roadway markings, including crosswalks, stop lines, and other traffic safety lines. As part of that work, two crosswalks that had been painted in rainbow colors were restriped. Officials said the rainbow paint had been donated and applied outside the town’s regular maintenance program.
“The Town recognizes the significance these crosswalks have held for members of our community and appreciates the generosity and spirit behind their original installation,” the statement said. Officials added that the work “does not reflect any change in the Town’s unyielding commitment to supporting and welcoming our LGBTQIA+ residents, families, and visitors.”
A follow-up statement on Monday stated that the Town understands the concerns the restriping has raised. It is reviewing policies and procedures for roadway markings, including those paid for with private donations, and invited residents to the October 21st Select Board meeting to share their views.
Joe Strothman has organized a GoFundMe fundraiser, “Restore Swampscott’s Rainbow Crosswalks,” that has raised $410 as of this writing. Strothman states that the money is for paint so the rainbow crosswalks can be restored, and that extra funds could be used for additional rainbow crosswalks.
