Report: COVID-19 cases, deaths, and hospitalizations increasing in children in the United States

As cases of COVID-19 are declining overall nationwide, a report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics is showing that coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths among children are rising.

According to AAP, on August 27, the age distribution of reported COVID-19 cases was provided on the health department websites of 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. While children represented only 9.5% of all cases in states reporting cases by age, over 476,000 children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic and the percentage of cases in the group has risen.

The definition of “child” age ranges reported for children varied by state (0-14, 0-17, 0-18, 0-19, and 0-20 years)

While severe illness in children concerning COVID-19 is still rare, cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are still on the rise.

70,330 new child cases were reported from 8/13-8/27 (406,109 to 476,439), a 17% increase in child cases over 2 weeks.

On August 27th, 4,163 COVID-19 total hospitalizations were reported. On July 30th, there were 2,669 total child hospitalizations.

The country had seen two child deaths from August 6th to 20th, however there were 9 deaths from August 20th to 27th.

No child has died from COVID-19 in Massachusetts, according to the report.
