Recent local robbery shows dangers of giving to panhandlers
Another local incident involving panhandlers occurred last week where in New Bedford a 65 year old man went to give to a local panhandler and was robbed of his wallet. The offender was arrested, but the money was never returned.
Police have warned of the dangers of giving in that manner and have encouraged residents to give to many of the good local charities instead. It has been mentioned that generally, but not always, the money you are giving to a panhandler is just feeding an addiction. New Bedford has begun putting up barriers to discourage these panhandlers. If Fall River tries something similar remains to be seen. Local leader’s hands are somewhat tied because outlawing panhandling often leads to court cases under free speech laws.
Many have had complaints about panhandlers both in Fall River as well as New Bedford though opinions vary. Some will continue to give no matter the risks. Some ridicule and just want the problem to go away. Helping feed the panhandler’s addiction will not help them or the problem. It will only fuel it and bring more panhandlers into the area. Officers have said as much. Even those who panhandle that do not have an addiction, local pantries could put that money to better use. Want to help an addict? Help them get into treatment or give to a local center such as Steppingstone. Whether homeless, an addict, or both, they can all use our help. Just in the right manner
We have a very giving community which is part of the charm of the South Coast. By no means stop giving to those in need. Some of our neighbors need our help now more then ever. Just make sure your donation is going in the right hands and for the right reasons.
