Priest in Fall River Diocese reportedly assaulted after theft attempt issues statement; suspect in custody

A 59-year-old man was arrested Monday evening following a disturbance involving a Fall River Diocese priest at Mount Carmel Church on Bonney Street in New Bedford.

According to New Bedford Police, at just after 5:15 p.m., units responded to the church for a report of a male arguing with a priest.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man, later identified as Jose Nascimento, involved in a physical altercation with the priest and a bystander who was assisting. Officers learned that Nascimento had entered the church and began knocking over items on the altar. A physical confrontation subsequently occurred as the priest escorted the male outside.

The priest sustained a minor injury to his face after being punched and hit with a beer can, and was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Nascimento was placed under arrest and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault and Battery, Threat to Commit a Crime, Disturbing the Peace, and Disorderly Conduct.

Father Chris Peschel, who has served in Westport, South Yarmouth, Attleboro, New Bedford, and as Chaplain for Massachusetts State Police, took to social media to give an update on how he is doing.

“Thank you everyone for your prayers and messages. I’m doing well and (I) am at St Luke’s Hospital getting some things checked out. Yes, a man attacked me at confessions and adoration this evening after he tried to steal the monstrance. I forgive him. I am just glad nobody else was hurt. I pinned him down until the police arrived. NBPD, the ambulance crew, and the staff at St Luke’s have been great. I am alright. Thank you all again…..Pray for that man! Pray for peace!”
