PROVIDENCE – A federal grand jury in Rhode Island has indicted a 28-year-old Guatemalan national previously deported and illegally present in the United States, on two counts of assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, or interfering with federal officers during their official duties, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

On April 30, 2025, Miguel Tamup-Tamup, also known as Miguel US Tamup, allegedly resisted an Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer and Homeland Security Investigations agents attempting to arrest him under an authorized warrant. During the struggle, an HSI agent sustained a serious injury.

Court documents indicate that on April 19, 2025, Tamup-Tamup was arrested for driving under the influence following a collision with another vehicle. After his arraignment and release, fingerprint analysis matched ICE records, identifying him as illegally present in the United States.

On April 30, 2025, ICE and HSI agents stopped a vehicle operated by Tamup-Tamup. When he refused to exit, agents removed him from the car. While attempting to handcuff him, Tamup-Tamup allegedly resisted by throwing his body and shoulders against the agents, flailing his arms, and breaking free from an agent’s hold. In the altercation, an agent fell and suffered a serious leg injury. Tamup-Tamup fled while the injured agent received assistance.

On May 16, 2025, ICE and HSI agents apprehended Tamup-Tamup at a Providence residence. He has remained in custody since his initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on that date.

A federal indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Milind Shah.
