Police pursuit in Stoughton leads to fatal crash, motor vehicle homicide charges for 26-year-old man
The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police and Stoughton Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred this morning in Stoughton leaving one dead and another injured.
At approximately 10:40 a.m. the Brockton Police attempted to stop a pick-up driven by Jason Ortiz, 26, of Brockton. The pursuit continued into Stoughton where Ortiz collided with a sedan. Occupants of the sedan were transported by the Stoughton Fire Department from the scene.
The driver of the sedan, an 84-year-old Stoughton man, was pronounced deceased. The passenger, a 78-year-old Stoughton woman, was injured and is hospitalized at this time.
After the crash, Ortiz ran from the scene but was subsequently apprehended following a search by Stoughton, Brockton and Massachusetts State Police.
Ortiz has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and failing to stop for police.
He is scheduled to be arraigned at Stoughton District Court on Monday.
The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office, the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, MSP Crime Scene Services Section, and Stoughton Police.
