Police in Massachusetts warning residents of scam targeting Comcast/Xfinity subscribers

The Methuen Police Department is alerting residents to a scam targeting Comcast/Xfinity subscribers.

Victims are contacted by phone and offered a 50% discount on their cable bill, provided they commit to an additional two years of service. However, the catch is that the first year—or, in some cases, the first six months-must be paid in advance using Target gift cards.

Unlike typical phishing or robocall scams, the fraudsters in this case are specifically targeting actual Xfinity customers. They spoof Caller ID so that the call appears to be from Xfinity, and they possess detailed information about the customer’s account, making the offer seem legitimate. The scammers claim the unusual payment method is part of a joint promotion between Comcast and Target.

In December 2023 and October 2024, several nationwide data breaches involving Comcast compromised the account details of millions of subscribers. As a result, scammers may have access to personal information that makes their calls more convincing.

If you receive a suspicious call, you should:

Report it to the Comcast Security Assurance team by emailing abuse@comcast.net.
