Police in Massachusetts sending out warning to the public concerning scam targeting Massachusetts residents

A local police department is warning the public of a scam that is targeting many residents in Massachusetts.

Westport Police say there are text messages being received from EZDriveMA stating you have a balance which needs to be paid soon. THIS IS A SCAM!!! EZDriveMA is the State’s electronic tolling program which charges you tolls for using various highways within the state.

WPD contacted the state, and they stated you would never be contacted by text message to pay your balance.

Anyone receiving these texts should not click on the link.

MassDOT stresses that:

– EZDriveMA will NEVER request payment via text message.

– All links associated with EZDriveMA will include www.EZDriveMA.com

The FBI recommends individuals that receive the fraudulent messages do the following:

    1    File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov (https://www.ic3.gov/), be sure to include:

    a    The phone number from where the text originated.

    b    The website listed within the text.

    2    Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.

    3    Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number at (877) 627-7745.

    4    Delete any smishing texts received.

    5    If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges. 

Please check ALL text messages for authenticity.
