PLAINVILLE — Chief Robert Skinner reports that the Plainville Fire Department responded Friday afternoon to a fatal fire on School Street.

At just after 3:00 p.m., Plainville Fire responded to reports of a house fire at 61 School St. A second alarm was quickly struck.

Crews arrived within 2 minutes and encountered heavy fire conditions in a single-family, ranch-style house.

Firefighters made entry to the home and encountered the sole occupant, a man who used a wheelchair and had not been able to escape from the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and no one else was injured.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was accidental.

The North Attleborough, Foxborough, Mansfield, Bellingham, Norfolk, Wrentham, and Cumberland, Rhode Island, fire departments provided mutual aid at the scene. The Attleboro Fire Department provided station coverage.

The Mansfield Emergency Management Agency and Providence Canteen provided rehab at the scene.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Plainville Fire Department, Plainville Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
