Owner of Lizzie Borden House responds to opening of Miss Lizzie’s Coffee
The owner of the Lizzie Borden House is planning on taking action after the opening of a Lizzie Borden themed coffee shop in Fall River.
Fall River Reporter contacted a representative for Lance Zaal early last week about the Miss Lizzie’s Coffee shop that opened next door to the Borden House on Second Street on August 4th. It was asked if he was part of the ownership of Miss Lizzie’s and had any details on the new spot. If not, would he be taking any actions against the shop. We later determined that Zaal was not part of the ownership. After not hearing from Zaal, Reporter put out an article this past weekend on the coffee shop. On Monday morning, Zaal issued a statement through his public relations rep.
“Miss Lizzie’s Coffee” violates our intellectual property and has created a false association and confusion with the house and its operation. We are taking appropriate action to correct this and defend our marks. We have also been selling Lizzie Borden Coffee in the gift shop and plan to provide coffee options to our guests directly.”
Reporter then contacted Joe Pereira who is part owner of Miss Lizzie’s for comment and if he had additional details on the shop.
Pereira has not yet responded to Zaal’s comments, however, he stated Monday that he had not heard from him as of yet and appeared to be in the process of contacting Zaal after becoming aware of his statement.
In addition to the shop, Pereira stated that there are plans for an art gallery next door headed by his daughter.
What happens next between Zaal and Miss Lizzie remains to be seen.

Let’s all just get along. Two places carrying Lizzie Borden’s name is not a crisis.

Good those who just care about money should have problems as money is a high stress zone unless used to make the world better for all which focusing on a past murder helps no one or nothing. Hope Lizzie curse both places

I totally agree. Something really horrible happened there that a family has to deal with forever. Capitalizing on it, even leaving that house standing as a reminder, is disgusting.

Good luck! Unless he has Miss Lizzie’s trademarked as a company in the business of selling coffee, I doubt he has a case.
If someone opened a restaurant called McDonald’s and they sold hamburgers there could be an IP issue, but if they opened McDonald’s and were a bar good luck.

Zaal has made it a practice of going into cities across the country that already have well-established ghost tours, copying those tours almost verbatim, and then opening up his own tour with the same or similar name. In addition, Zaal ensures that his tour groups meet in the exact same place, at the exact same time as the previously established ghost tour. It’s pretty funny how he’s suddenly concerned about “intellectual property.”

Shady hack group who steals other people’s intellectual property for a quick buck now worried that someone is stealing their intellectual property for a quick buck. Karma, baby. Oh and side note, not really your intellect that got you the property in the first place.

“False association and confusion”, Lance? Like when you roll into a town, ape the name of the most successful ghost tour, but don’t bother to pay state taxes or for a business license in that city? Intellectual Property? Like secretly recording other tours and then having your guides repeat the stories inaccurately? What goes around comes around, chump! The Other Side is watching!
