One suspect and two victims dead concerning two deaths in one day in Brockton

BROCKTON – Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police are investigating the overnight shooting of a 26-year-old male, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

At approximately 7:31 p.m. last night, Brockton Police and Brewster Emergency Medical Services responded to 19 West Park Street for a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, first responders located a 26-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. The male victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital before he was medflighted to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:06 a.m. He is not being identified at this time.

Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and an investigation commenced. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Earlier on Wednesday, authorities made an arrest in the stabbing death of a Massachusetts woman.

Just after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Brockton Police received a 911 call for a report of a woman bleeding in the driveway at 342 Crescent Street in Brockton. Upon arrival, Brockton Police and emergency medical personnel located the female victim on the ground with obvious trauma to the head. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Veronica Goncalves.

Preliminarily, this appears to have been a targeted attack and not a random act of violence.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner accepted jurisdiction of the case and will determine the cause and manner of death.

According to officials, Goncalves had visible wounds to her head and face and was declared deceased at the scene.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz stated that 56-year-old Joao Correia was located inside the apartment, and he told investigators that he had ingested battery acid and suffered a medical episode. Correia was transported to the hospital where he died just after 9:30 p.m.

Family stated that Goncalves 2-year-old grandchild witnessed the attack in a nearby vehicle and the attacker was in a previous relationship with Goncalves.

The investigation is ongoing.
