One injured after 2nd fire in one day in Westport

Westport Firefighters responded to yet another wood stove related fire on Sunday evening in the neighborhood of 1634-1636 Drift Road.

According to the Westport Fire Department, the Deputy Chief, who lives close by, quickly arrived to find smoke coming from the two-story home, with neighbors calling for help stating the occupant was still inside. It was quickly determined that the occupant was not trapped, as he was found in the yard in need of medical attention, which responding firefighter/paramedics quickly provided.

Firefighters found active fire in the creosote packed chimney pipe and smokestack. Using a dry-chemical fire extinguisher and chains, firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire, before it caused any structural damage to the home.

The occupant was treated & transported by Westport’s Firefighter/Paramedics for evaluation.

The Chief, Deputy Chief, Engines 3, 4, and Rescue 1 responded to the scene.

The department’s tanker was canceled prior to arrival. Several off-duty and on-call firefighters responded to assist the duty crew.

Earlier on Sunday, Westport firefighters rescued a pet dog from a severely damaged home.

The department warned that proper cleaning and maintenance of your heating appliances, particularly wood burning stoves, is critical in ensuring they can be used safely.
