A three-alarm fire claimed one person’s life early Monday morning, said Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey, Rockland Police Chief Nicholas P. Zeoli, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.
“On behalf of the Rockland Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a loved one this morning,” said Chief Duffey. “This is a sad day for them and our community.”
The Rockland Fire Department received a call for smoke in the area of Centre Avenue at 3:37 this morning. A short time later, Rockland Police confirmed a structure fire at 121 Centre Ave.
Rockland firefighters observed heavy fire coming from the second floor of the single-family home and heavy smoke from all levels of the building. With information that a resident was still inside, they immediately began attacking the fire and made entry to search for residents, finding one adult deceased inside.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a formal identification process and determine the cause and manner of death.
The first personnel at the scene reported that they did not hear smoke alarms sounding on arrival.
The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the Rockland Fire Department, Rockland Police, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth DA’s office. They are assisted by the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit.
The fire went to three alarms and firefighters brought it fully under control in about an hour. The fire departments of Hanover, Abington, Hingham, Whitman, Brockton, Randolph, Hanson, Norwell, and Pembroke provided mutual aid at the scene, and the Holbrook Fire Department provided station coverage. The Department of Fire Services and Boston Sparks Association provided rehab services to support firefighter health and safety at the scene. The Red Cross of Massachusetts responded to assist displaced residents.
Also, an Oswego Street resident has died after being injured in an early morning fire, said Springfield Fire Commissioner Miguel Rivera, Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, and Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.
Springfield Fire & Emergency Services responded to 75 Oswego Street shortly before 6:00 on Friday morning after an alarm activation. On arrival, they made entry and located the fire in a fourth-floor apartment. They found one resident, an adult woman, unresponsive and in cardiac arrest inside. Firefighters immediately removed her from the building for medical care. Emergency medical technicians began lifesaving efforts, restoring the woman’s pulse during transport to an area hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries over the weekend.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit of origin.
The Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad, Springfield Police, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Hampden DA’s office determined that the fire started in the bedroom. The exact cause remains under investigation.
