Officer in Massachusetts navigates rough waters on rowboat and single-handedly makes water rescue

A Massachusetts officer is being hailed a hero after single-handedly making a water rescue.

According to police, on Sunday, at approximately 11:00 a.m., an alert citizen called 9-1-1 to report a kayaker in distress. Upon arriving to the scene, responding officers observed an overturned yellow kayak in the middle of the lake and at least one individual in the water without a life jacket. The individual repeatedly disappeared from view due to wind and wave conditions, which also appeared to prevent the kayaker from righting the vessel.

Without hesitation, Officer Turnbull obtained a rowboat, launched it, and navigated through the rough water to reach the distressed individual. After making contact, Officer Turnbull towed both the individual and the overturned kayak safely back to shore. Once ashore, the individual was evaluated by the Pembroke Fire Department and declined further medical treatment. He advised responders that he had been in the water for approximately 20 minutes prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

The department stated that Officer Turnbull’s decisive actions, initiative, and willingness to place himself in harm’s way directly prevented what could have become a tragic outcome.
