O’ Gil’s Portuguese Restaurant in Fall River closes for the week after death of co-owner

A co-owner of a popular Fall River eatery has died.

O’ Gil’s Portuguese Restaurant at 915 County Street announced Tuesday the death of one of their own.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we inform you of the death of our owner and friend Phil Sousa. OGil’s we be closed the week of September 9th, so family and friends can pay their respects. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding during this difficult time.”

According to an obituary, the 77-year-old Sousa passed away unexpectedly on Friday at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Sousa had been part owner of O’Gil’s, along with his brother-in-law, Victor Fagundo and his niece, Alice Fagundo.

Sousa was described as a witty man who was always the life of the party. In addition to working at the restaurant, he also loved the Benfica soccer team and traveling back to his homeland in the Azores to visit his family.  While having those interests, Sousa was most of all a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who very much enjoyed spending quality time with all of his family.

Sousa’s funeral will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. from the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, 730 Bedford St., Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Church at 9:00 a.m. The visitation will take place on Friday, September 13, 2024, in the Silva-Faria Funeral Home from 5-8 PM. Committal and Entombment in Notre Dame Mausoleum.
