New York, Massachusetts, California, Illinois, Nevada among state financial officials outraged over President Trump’s immigration actions citing economic impacts
In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, a coalition of state treasurers, auditors, comptrollers, and other fiscal officers from 15 states expressed deep outrage over recent federal immigration enforcement actions.
In the letter, they highlighted the resulting climate of fear, violence, and loss of life, emphasizing the severe economic and fiscal consequences, including disruptions to daily life, business operations, workforce participation, and local markets.
The signatories argued that these actions lead to reduced revenue, instability in employment-related taxes, diminished economic output, weakened creditworthiness, borrowing costs, and long-term financial planning challenges for states.
They noted that while the federal government destabilizes local economies, many states are already sending more tax dollars to Washington than they receive in support, deeming the actions unacceptable.
The letter urged the administration to immediately scale back harmful enforcement activities to restore economic stability.
Signatories include officials from Rhode Island, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, Maryland, Vermont, Washington (noting the treasurer signed solely in official capacity), Connecticut, New York, California (both treasurer and controller), Nevada, and Delaware.
