DARTMOUTH, MA – Local police set up a sting that caught an alleged scammer.

According to police, on Thursday, at approximately 5 p.m., the Dartmouth Police Department was contacted by a resident who believed that they may have been the victim of a scam.

The victim explained that they received a pop-up on their computer that noted the computer was hacked and that they needed to call “Apple Security” at the provided phone number. While on the phone, someone claiming to be from “Apple Security” told the victim that their bank
accounts had been compromised and their personal information was used for illegal activities.

Not long after, someone claiming to be from their bank informed the victim that their bank
accounts were compromised and that funds would need to be withdrawn and moved to a new
account immediately. The alleged bank instructed them to make two separate $15,000 cash
withdrawals, on two separate days. The individual on the phone stated that they would send
someone to the victim’s house to pick up the cash to deposit into a new account. On both days,
an individual came to the victim’s house to pick up the cash. After the second interaction, the
victim contacted the police.

On Friday, Detective Kyle Berube conducted a follow-up investigation. With the assistance of detectives from the Community Impact Unit and patrol officers, a reverse sting operation was devised to identify the individual picking up the cash.

Approximately eight hours later, a male arrived at an undisclosed location to collect more cash.

Bishi Zhu, 29, of Brooklyn, New York was placed under arrest and is being charged with
attempts to commit a crime, and conspiracy (larceny by false pretense).

The case, led by Detective Berube, remains under investigation.
