A 65-year-old New Bedford man who served the Massachusetts community for decades has died.

Richard Scherbarth passed away last week at St. Luke’s Hospital.

According to an obituary, Richard “dedicated his life to public service, building a distinguished career as a Firefighter and Paramedic for over four decades. Richard began his career with COMM Fire on January 5, 1985, as a Firefighter/EMT-P. His commitment and leadership led to his promotion to Lieutenant on March 15, 1991, and later to EMS Officer on October 2, 2006. He was a certified car seat installer, a proud member of the Honor Guard, and served on the IAFF Local 2346 Executive Board from 1987 to 1997. He concluded his dedicated service with COMM Fire upon his resignation on November 4, 2013.”

“In addition to his time at COMM Fire, Richard also served the community of Mattapoisett working as a Paramedic for ten years with Mattapoisett Police & EMS, as well as with Brewster Ambulance for another decade. He also briefly served the Town of Marion, with Marion Fire & EMS serving the position of Lieutenant/ EMS supervisor. Throughout his career, as a provider and educator, he touched countless lives with his skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication.”

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
