A local man was killed and another injured in a weekend motorcycle crash.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., the Lakeville Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police responded to a motorcycle crash Sunday.

According to LFD, Car 1, Ambulance 1, Ambulance 2, and Engine 1 responded to Route 140 North, just before Myricks, for two motorcycles down.

While responding to the scene, firefighters were notified by State Police that the operators of the motorcycles had been badly injured.

According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, the preliminary investigation suggests that the motorcycles were traveling on Route 140 northbound in Lakeville when they came into contact with each other. Both operators were ejected from their bikes and landed onto the shoulder of the road. A 2012 Yamaha YZFR1 operated by Igor K. Mendes, 25, of New Bedford, sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. A 2008 Honda CBR100 operated by a 22-year-old New Bedford man, suffered minor injuries and was also transported to RI Hospital.

Mendes died from his injuries at the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collison Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Plymouth County.
