Friends and loved ones are remembering a Massachusetts woman who was allegedly killed by her husband.

36-year-old Jeffrey MacDonald of Wilbraham was arraigned Thursday morning in Eastern Hampshire District Court in connection with the murder of his wife, 31-year-old Emma MacDonald inside the Hotel UMass on Wednesday evening. MacDonald and his wife were both employees of UMass Amherst.

MacDonald pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder and one charge of assault and battery upon a police officer. Judge Rebecca Michaels ordered MacDonald held without bail and continued the case to May 12th. Initially the Court continued the case to May 22nd, but that date was later changed to May 12th.

Assistant District Attorney Aidan Lanciani represented the Commonwealth and Jonah Goldsmith, of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, was appointed to represent MacDonald.

According to NBC Boston, MacDonald allegedly confessed to investigators that he intentionally beat her to death using his hands, feet, and a variety of other objects, stating it was his intent to kill her. MacDonald was previously accused of physically and verbally assaulting his two children in 2024.

According to The Boston Globe, the MacDonalds had been married since 2022. Friends of Emma later mentioned “red flags” about her husband’s erratic behavior in the time leading up to the incident.

Those who knew Emma, who worked as a dining hall/catering supervisor at the college, described her as a loving and devoted mother, a dedicated worker, and a vibrant, big-hearted woman who lit up every room she entered. Trevor, a friend of Emma, told Fall River Reporter that she “was a ray of sunshine in so many of our lives and that is how we want her to be remembered.” Others stated that Emma was hardworking, committed, and always wearing her signature warm smile. She was also known for being compassionate and loyal.

The case remains under active investigation by the UMass Amherst Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts Crime Scene Services Section. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Anyone who may have information relating to this incident is encouraged to contact the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit at (413) 586-5150.
