A Massachusetts town revealed that they were recently scammed out of a large sum of money.

According to the East Bridgewater Select Board on June 1st the Town of East Bridgewater was the target of a data breach that resulted in a loss of $425,000 via a wire transfer to individuals posing as attorneys representing the Town and a party to litigation involving the Town.

The Board states that the matter remains under investigation by law enforcement and will also be the subject of an independent administrative investigation to determine what occurred and how similar issues can be avoided going forward.

The Town is also doing an immediate review of their internal financial policies to limit exposure to similar attacks in the future.

The Board had no further comment on this matter.

It is unclear if the town has any means to recoup any of the loses, and if not, how it will impact town finances.
