Massachusetts State Troopers investigating fatal pedestrian crash

A pedestrian has been killed after a late night crash on a Massachusetts highway.

According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to the State Police-Charlton Barracks responded to a crash involving a pedestrian struck by a tractor-trailer on the eastbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Charlton. The crash resulted in the fatality of the pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Anthony Nunziato indicates that a 1993 Toyota Camry became disabled in the breakdown lane. While the operator, a 33-year-old Hartford man, was outside of the vehicle standing to the left of the car with the driver’s door opened into the right travel lane, an oncoming tractor-trailer struck the Camry’s operator and the open door.

The operator of the Camry was determined to be deceased at the scene. His name is not being released at this time. The Camry’s passenger, a 35-year-old Hartford man, was not injured.

The tractor-trailer was a 2017 International hauling a 53-foot long box trailer that was operated by a 47-year-old East Hartford man. The truck’s driver, who pulled over immediately after the crash, was not injured.

The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detective Unit for Worcester County.

The right lane at the crash scene was closed until 3:02 a.m. to facilitate the investigation and reconstruction. No further information is being released at this time.
