Massachusetts State Rep. Fiola responds after backlash over $25,000 earmark for Fall River welcome sign

A local State Rep recently announced earmarks she had secured, one of which caused some backlash.
On Monday, Representative Carole Fiola posted on social media 7 earmarks she secured in the Massachusetts House of Representatives Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget that was passed. One of the earmarks was $25,000 for a new “Welcome to Fall River” sign on Route 24 which caused outrage by some.
Fiola issued a response on social media to the criticism.
“I understand there are questions about the $25,000 budget earmark for a welcome sign on Rt 24 which I have repeatedly heard requests to replace through the years. $25,000 is a placeholder. The budget process is far from over and once finalized funds would be accessed no earlier than the late Fall. Once finalized, the intention would be to contact Diman and if possible, they could be the contractor. All funds not expended go back to the general fund. As Always, please reach out with any questions you may have.”
Among the remaining earmarks were funding for senior citizens, youth, theater, and relationship violence prevention.
