TEWKSBURY – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has confirmed that 28-year-old Massachusetts State Trooper James Doran of Tewksbury was arraigned in Lowell District Court on the charge of operating under the influence of alcohol.   Doran allegedly struck another vehicle in the area of Main Street and Clark Road in Tewksbury while off duty.

Doran was released on personal recognizance with conditions to not consume alcohol and to surrender his license.

On Sunday at just before 11:15 p.m., Tewksbury Police responded to a two-car crash where the defendant had allegedly struck another vehicle from behind.  Upon arrival police observed Doran to be allegedly unsteady on his feet with slurred speech while smelling of alcohol.  Police also located open alcohol containers in the vehicle. Doran was arrested on scene and was also cited with being in possession of an open alcohol container.

According to Tim McGuirk, Interim Director of Media Relations at Massachusetts State Police, Doran resigned his position of Massachusetts State Trooper effective Wednesday.

Pursuant to Department policy, as a member who separated from service after being charged with a criminal offense, Doran is ineligible to be reinstated. The Department will also provide information regarding the misconduct to the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission in accordance with MGL c. 6E, § 8(b)

The next date in Doran’s case is December 6, 2024.
