Massachusetts State Police, local police, make arrest after police chase where suspect allegedly dragged State Trooper
A man is facing charges after a police pursuit Thursday involving State Police Troopers and local police.
According to preliminary information from Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a Trooper on patrol attempted to stop a vehicle on Route 25, prior to the Bourne Bridge. With heavy traffic on the Bourne Bridge, additional Troopers joined ,and tried to get the driver to exit the vehicle. When the driver’s door was open, the car began to move, dragging one of the Troopers several feet.
The suspect vehicle continued to flee the scene. Information about the suspect was shared amongst law enforcement, and MSP and Falmouth Police began to monitor for sightings of the vehicle. State Police Airwing and K-9 teams were also alerted.
A short time later, the suspect vehicle was identified outside of a residence in East Falmouth. Members of the MSP STOP Team and Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section responded to the residence where the suspect was initially non-compliant.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was eventually taken into custody, along with an additional person at the residence who had outstanding warrants. The suspect was transported to the hospital to be evaluated, then was being brought to the Bourne Barracks to be booked on a number of charges. The Trooper who was dragged was transported to be evaluated for what appear to be minor injuries.
State Representative Steve Xiarhos released the following statement:
“Thank you to the state and local police officers who responded to the high-speed pursuit over the Bourne Bridge today. Because of their quick and coordinated response, a dangerous suspect is now in custody.
“I also want to extend my thoughts and prayers to the officers who were injured.
“I was in the Bourne area during this incident and saw the heavy traffic firsthand as we head into the 250th Independence Day weekend on Cape Cod. Our officers were working under real pressure in real time.
“What happened today—and what we continue to see in Boston—is unacceptable. Attacks on police officers and first responders are attacks on public safety.
“As a former police officer and Deputy Chief, and as the proud father and father-in-law of two current officers, I stand firmly with them.
“They deserve more than words. They deserve action.
“That’s why I have filed legislation to strengthen protections for those who serve:
• H.2057 – The HALO Act
• H.2059 – Ends cashless bail for violent and repeat offenders
• H.2060 – Elevates assaults on first responders to a felony offense
“We need accountability. We need consequences. And we need to fully support the men and women who protect our communities every day.
“Always Back the Blue.”
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and no other information was released.
