Westborough – Massachusetts State Police are investigating a rollover crash.

According to Trooper James D. DeAngelis, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday Troopers assigned to the Charlton Barracks responded to reports of a box truck rollover on Route 90 westbound in the area of Mile Marker 107 in Westborough. Minor injuries were reported to the operator, a 74-year-old man from Worcester.

Due to the location of the crash in a construction zone, as well as the position of the truck after the crash, all westbound lanes were blocked with traffic unable to pass. Route 90 westbound at Route 9 was closed with all traffic temporarily diverted off the exit. Fire crews on scene then began the process of draining the truck’s fuel tank to allow it to be slightly repositioned, while a full recovery plan was made, with the intent of reopening a travel lane. Shortly before 4 p.m. one westbound lane was reopened and by 4:15 p.m. the remainder of the westbound lanes reopened. The Route 9 detour was then removed and the scene cleared.

The crash caused significant traffic backups and delays on both directions of Route 90, as well as ancillary and secondary roadways. The exact cause of the crash, including any potential charges, remains under investigation by Troopers assigned to State Police-Charlton and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Westborough Fire Department and MassDOT. Lengthy traffic delays are expected to continue well into the evening commute.
