Massachusetts State Police help deliver baby on side of highway
The term “no call is routine” took on a new meaning Sunday morning.
According to Massachusetts State Police, shortly after 7 a.m. on Sunday, Trooper Jordan Cavaco was on patrol traveling on Route 95 northbound in Canton. As he was approaching Exit 12 he noticed a vehicle traveling in the left lane appearing to flag his cruiser down by flashing its high beams and hazard lights. The man driving was looking for help so Trooper Cavaco instructed him to pull over at the split of Routes 93 and 95. After both vehicles were safely able to stop Trooper Cavaco realized a woman in the vehicle was going in to labor. He requested EMS and secured his medical bag and OBGYN kit then jumped into action.
Trooper Cavaco assisted with the successful delivery of the baby girl, during which mother and baby remained conscious and alert the entire time. Additional Troopers arrived on scene and assisted with the process as well. They were able to confirm the infant’s airways were clear and wrapped her up for warmth until the arrival of EMS. The father was able to keep the mother warm and as calm as the situation allowed throughout the process.
Trooper Cavaco stated that he was very happy to have had the opportunity to assist the family with the delivery of their baby girl!
